Why Join Us:

The BDC Research Division is at the forefront of international research efforts to gain insight into the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the cellular and molecular level. Strengths of the BDC research team lie with the breadth of work studying the immune cell mechanisms underlying the autoimmune attack, the role of the pancreatic beta cell in T1D, and the interaction between the immune cells and beta cells during the disease process. These studies are greatly strengthened by the unique clinical resource of ongoing studies of new onset patients and their relatives of patients who are evaluated prospectively for the development of the antibodies associated with type 1 diabetes and the development of clinical diabetes. Based on the discoveries made by the basic research teams, the BDC is also actively pursuing ongoing trials using antigen-specific therapies, including the use of small molecules aimed at restoration of immune tolerance. The BDC research division is continually expanding their innovative research programs with the goal of identifying disease-predicting biomarkers that are secreted from the beta cell, developing novel methods to protect the beta cell from autoimmune destruction, and using human stem cell technologies to develop beta cell replacement therapies.
