About the Position:
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) works with other units throughout campus to seek external support for faculty research, creative activity and institutional projects that support the educational and service mission of the university. We are seeking an Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Projects. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Research and Sponsored Projects (RSP) reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and will lead campus efforts to develop and strengthen capacity and productivity in trans-disciplinary research, scholarship, and creative activity across all disciplines. The efforts and duties of the AVP are in support of the University's strategic plan and our campus commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The AVP is charged with implementing a vision and structure that supports faculty success in obtaining external funding across wide-ranging and comprehensive research and creative activities. To that end, the individual is charged with providing leadership to support units within the Office of RSP and ASC. The AVP administers a variety of internal and intramural grant programs. The AVP also has oversight for centers and institutes, and is responsible for fostering student research within the context of a teacher/scholar model. The AVP works in partnership with University Advancement; and as the campus chief compliance officer assures currency of campus compliance policies on the protection of human subjects and prehistoric artifacts, animal welfare, intellectual property, conflict of interest, and scholarly misconduct. In carrying out these responsibilities, the AVP works in consultation with individual faculty and staff as well as with the respective deans, other academic administrators, respective faculty committees, academic centers, and other units on campus that support research. Other duties include responsibility for authoring and maintaining research policies and operating procedures for campus employees receiving external funds, generating reports focused on annual goals and productivity measures, assessing and evaluating the impact of implemented policies, monitoring legislation, and revising policies and procedures as necessary. The AVP provides leadership for effective and efficient budget management, staff professional development, workflow, policies and procedures development, and communication with other internal and external constituents. Finally, the AVP performs other duties as may be assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.


Essential Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited college or university and a record of teaching, scholarship, and administrative service sufficient to be appointed to a tenured full professor position in the University. Experience in submission of significant grants and contracts acquisitions, and administration of grants and contracts. Management or academic administrative experience including supervising staff. Experience working cooperatively and collegially with diverse groups of faculty, staff, students, community members and organizations, and regulatory agency personnel. Ability to implement strategies to increase the number, quality, and competitiveness of grant submissions and awards aimed at supporting the overall advancement of the University's mission and goals. Knowledge of intellectual property rights and familiarity with technology transfer. Strong analytical reasoning, budgeting, and forecasting abilities. Understanding about research compliance and federal regulations. Ability to contribute to the University's strategic goals (planning.fullerton.edu)

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with the CSUF Academic Senate. Knowledge of CSU system policies. At least three years of experience at Cal State Fullerton. Experience with campus budget processes. Experience collaborating on projects with faculty and staff . Minimum of one year experience with staff management/supervision. Knowledge of policies and procedures at CSUF. Achievement of the rank of Professor. Excellent communication skills written and oral. Proven ability to elevate others, individually or collectively. Excellent collaborative skills. Record of scholarship and research, and/or acquiring grants and fostering projects that support diversity and inclusion.
